I-80\'s icy warning at Donner Pass: A fictional life-and-death journey
It was the last week of December. Donner Pass in the mountains of California was covered in snow. The weather service had issued a dire warning that heavy snowfall and blizzards were on the way on Interstate 80. Nevertheless, Rajesh and his wife Nisha set out on a journey with their young son Aarav.
Their plan was simple – to drive from Sacramento to Reno. But nature had a different plan.
When they reached Donner Pass, the sky suddenly became covered with dark clouds. Within moments, heavy snow began to fall. Visibility on the road began to decrease and the car’s wheels began to slide in the snow.
“Rajesh, should we turn back?” Nisha asked in a worried voice.
Rajesh looked ahead. “It’s hard to turn back now. We have to move forward.”
Suddenly, the snow began to increase with strong winds. Within minutes, the road was almost invisible. Other vehicles on Interstate 80 also slowed down. Some vehicles were parked on the side of the road.
Rajesh’s car suddenly slipped and stopped on the side of the road.
“Oh no!” Rajesh slammed on the brakes.
Now they were stuck in the snow.
The cold inside the car started to increase. The temperature outside was below zero. The mobile network also became weak.
Aarav was scared. “Dad, are we going home?”
Rajesh smiled, but inside he was also scared. “Yes son, we will definitely go.”
Nisha immediately took out the blankets kept in the car. “Aarav has to be kept warm.”
After some time, a nearby truck driver saw their situation and came to help.
“Are you guys stuck here?” he asked.
“Yes,” Rajesh said, “The road is closed.”
The truck driver said, “I’m calling the California Highway Patrol. They will come for rescue.”
Time slowly started passing. The snow continued to fall harder. Night fell.
Every moment inside the car was getting harder.
Nisha told Rajesh, “We have to be brave.”
A few hours later, lights appeared in the distance. It was the California Highway Patrol rescue team.
“We’re here!” an officer called out.
They took Rajesh’s family out of the car and put them in the warm rescue vehicle.
Aarav’s face smiled again.
“Dad, we’re saved!” he said happily.
Rajesh looked at Nishan. There were tears of relief in both of their eyes.
🌨️ Final message
After this incident, Rajesh realized how insignificant humans are in front of nature. It is never a good idea to ignore weather warnings before traveling to a place like Donner Pass.
Snowfall is not only a beauty, but also a sign of danger.
